Jaleos

What is it?

It is a palo (style) associated with the Spanish province of Extremadura. Like Tangos, it has a close relationship with the gypsy people, being a festive style. This word refers to the “uproar” of people gathered together to have fun as well as the shout that the artists use to cheer (stimulate) the dancer on stage with words like ole, arsa, agua, ¡vamos allá!….

Why is it used?

It is a short cante associated with bulería and is used when we want to bring that party atmosphere to our dance.

Thematic

The themes reflected in the lyrics of the jaleos are varied and open. Mainly we are going to find allusions to the province of Extremadura and traditional issues; the countryside, food, love…

How is it interpreted?

This is a style that is rarely performed in the tablao due to its high difficulty to generate culminating moments in short periods of time. However, it is used by the performer to demonstrate a certain virtuosity in the timing of his steps. Its complexity is also related to the charisma that each artist has to accentuate on stage.
