It can be\u00a0<\/span>jondo<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(the stuff that hurts, the deep, serious part) or\u00a0<\/span>chico<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0(the party vibe, the fun, lighter love stuff). And then there’s stuff in between. Each\u00a0<\/span>palo<\/span>\u00a0(I’ll tell you what that is later) has its own thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n\nCantaor\/a:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0The guy (or gal) who has the guts (or the heart!) to get up there and bare their soul with their voice. Each one has their own “metal,” their unique sound. Some caress you, others scratch you up inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n\nCante Jondo:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0Oof. This is the heavy stuff. The kind that talks about deep sorrows, death, unfiltered life. It’s the oldest kind of flamenco, the stuff that has weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n\nCante Chico:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0The flip side.\u00a0<\/span>Alegr\u00edas<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>buler\u00edas<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>tangos<\/span>… for dancing, for laughing, for shaking off the blues for a bit. More rhythm, more life.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n\nAfill\u00e1 (Voz):<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0You know that voice that isn’t ‘pretty,’ but gets right into your bones? Raspy, like it’s got sand in it. That’s it! Pure grit.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n\nJip\u00edo \/ Quej\u00edo:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0That torn ‘Ay!’ that escapes. The pure lament, beyond words. If you don’t feel a pinch right there… something’s wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n\nTemple:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0That little moment just before they start. The\u00a0<\/span>cantaor<\/span>\u00a0closes their eyes, finds the key, tests their voice… A silence falls that’s thick with anticipation. Pure tension.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n\nLetra:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0The little verses they sing. Sometimes they’re centuries old, sometimes they make ’em up on the spot. Short, but they say a lot.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n\nRemate:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0The big finish. When they really give it some gas to close the\u00a0<\/span>letra<\/span>\u00a0or the\u00a0<\/span>cante<\/span>. Boom! Desplante:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0A sudden stop, planting themselves with attitude (artistic attitude, you know?). Like saying “Here I am.” Used to mark the end of a section or a change.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n- \n
Llamada:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0A tap, a gesture, a strong stomp… to signal the musicians: “Watch out, I’m changing!” or “Your turn now!”<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n- \n

Guitarrista (or Tocaor):<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0The one on the ‘sonanta’ (the guitar). They cushion the\u00a0<\/span>cante<\/span>, give the beat to the\u00a0<\/span>baile<\/span>, sometimes they rip out solos that blow your mind (<\/span>que flipas<\/span>).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n- \n
