This is just you and me \u2014 so we can understand each other.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">What Comes from the Soul: The Voice and the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Cante<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Cante:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Well, it means singing. But in flamenco it&#8217;s&#8230; something else. It&#8217;s the voice slicing through the air. It can be\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">jondo<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0(the stuff that hurts, the deep, serious part) or\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">chico<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0(the party vibe, the fun, lighter love stuff). And then there&#8217;s stuff in between. Each\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">palo<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0(I&#8217;ll tell you what that is later) has its own thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Cantaor\/a:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0The guy (or gal) who has the guts (or the heart!) to get up there and bare their soul with their voice. Each one has their own &#8220;metal,&#8221; their unique sound. Some caress you, others scratch you up inside.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Cante Jondo:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Oof. This is the heavy stuff. The kind that talks about deep sorrows, death, unfiltered life. It&#8217;s the oldest kind of flamenco, the stuff that has weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Cante Chico:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0The flip side.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Alegr\u00edas<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">buler\u00edas<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">tangos<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">&#8230; for dancing, for laughing, for shaking off the blues for a bit. More rhythm, more life.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Afill\u00e1 (Voz):<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0You know that voice that isn&#8217;t &#8216;pretty,&#8217; but gets right into your bones? Raspy, like it&#8217;s got sand in it. That&#8217;s it! Pure grit.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Jip\u00edo \/ Quej\u00edo:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0That torn &#8216;Ay!&#8217; that escapes. The pure lament, beyond words. If you don&#8217;t feel a pinch right there&#8230; something&#8217;s wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Temple:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0That little moment just before they start. The\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">cantaor<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0closes their eyes, finds the key, tests their voice&#8230; A silence falls that&#8217;s thick with anticipation. Sometimes they&#8217;re centuries old, sometimes they make &#8217;em up on the spot. When they really give it some gas to close the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">letra<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0or the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">cante<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">. Boom! That&#8217;s the end of that bit.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">The Body Commands: The\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Baile<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0and its Moves<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Baile:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0When the body starts speaking flamenco. It can be elegant, wild, sad, happy&#8230; whatever fits.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Bailaor\/a:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0The one dancing it, obviously!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Zapateado:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0The racket they make with their feet! Pure rhythm beaten out with heels and taps. Can be soft or like a machine gun.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Braceo:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0The dance of the arms and hands. Looks easy, but the artistry some have! They accompany, they draw shapes in the air&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Desplante:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0A sudden stop, planting themselves with attitude (artistic attitude, you know?). The way they enter the stage tells you a lot about the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">palo<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">bailaor\/a<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Marcaje:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Carrying the rhythm with softer steps, kind of &#8220;walking&#8221; the beat before getting into the heavy stuff.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Vueltas:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Turns! Fast, slow, all kinds. They add spectacle.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Figura:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0The final pose of a movement. Like a snapshot full of intention.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">The Guitar, the Rhythm, and the Gear:\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Toque<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0and Instruments<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Toque:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Playing the flamenco guitar. They cushion the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">cante<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">, give the beat to the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">baile<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">, sometimes they rip out solos that blow your mind (<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">que flipas<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Falseta:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0That melodic bit the guitar plays alone, between verses of\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">cante<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">, or while the\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">bailaor<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0catches their breath. Time to show off.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Rasgueado:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0When they sweep across the strings with their fingers. That classic flamenco guitar sound, really going at it!<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Tr\u00e9molo:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0A technique that sounds like one note is trembling and never ends. Very beautiful.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Picado:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Playing notes very fast and clean, one after the other. Pure speed.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Arpegio:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Playing the notes of a chord one by one, like plucking them out individually.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\n<p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Caj\u00f3n:<\/strong><\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0That wooden box they sit on to play it. It&#8217;s the law. It&#8217;s when something magical, inexplicable happens. A shiver, goosebumps&#8230; Art in its purest form. You don&#8217;t look for it, it just appears!
